Quantity Surveying typically covers and manages the techno-commercial aspects of a building or a construction project. Historically the quantity surveyor was responsible for the measurement and scheduling of all materials and works involved in the construction project. Today, the role of quantity surveying covers a much wider scope ranging from feasibility studies and economic evaluation including determining budgets, forecasting future values and cash flow, as well as accounting for quantities of building materials, estimating the value of future works and monitoring the expenditure, variations and claims during the full life cycle of a construction project.
Quantity Surveyors (or as commonly referred “QS”) are also part of the PMC team to guide, manage and control financial side of the construction project or facility management covering BOQ, costs, taxes etc. using scientific and logical approach. A Quantity Surveyor is also sometimes referred to as a Cost Consultant, Cost Manager, Cost Engineer or Building Economist in different scenarios and parts of the world.
